Marcia Kim, President's Corner: Reflections on My First Three Months
A Warm Welcome and a Memorable Start
It’s hard to believe it has been less than three months since I stepped into the role of President and CEO of COPA. In that short time, I’ve had the honour of meeting many of you, witnessing firsthand the strength of our aviation community, and beginning the important work of advancing COPA’s mission.
One of my first official duties was attending our Annual General Meeting in Vernon, B.C., an event I will not soon forget.
“It was more than a business meeting; it was a celebration of the people, places, and passion that define General Aviation in Canada.”
I was moved by the extraordinary hospitality of COPA Flight 65, the Vernon Flying Club. From organizing meeting space and coordinating a tour of the local aviation museum, to offering members discounted fuel, and hosting both a lively BBQ and a pancake breakfast, their efforts perfectly reflected the generosity and dedication that fuel our community.
A First Flight to Remember
That weekend also marked a personal milestone: my very first flight in a Cessna 172. I was fortunate to be seated beside Regional Director Sigmond Sort, who handed me the controls shortly after takeoff.
At first, my eyes were fixed on the instruments, equal parts focus and awe. But after a few steady moments, I took a deep breath, looked up, and was completely captivated by the view — the blue sweep of Okanagan Lake, the rolling hills, and the vast open sky.
“In that moment, I felt something profound: the freedom, wonder, and accessibility that flight represents.”
It reminded me why COPA exists: to protect and promote the ability for Canadians from all walks of life to experience the joy of flight.
Building for the Future
While these early field experiences have been inspiring, much of my time has been focused on conducting an internal organizational review. My goal was to take a fresh look at how we operate and identify opportunities to better serve you, our members.
Through this process, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the professionalism and dedication of the COPA staff. Their commitment to our mission and readiness to evolve have been instrumental in laying the foundation for a more responsive and modernized member experience.
Together, we’ve translated our strategic plan into a practical and actionable operational plan. Starting this summer, COPA began putting this renewed approach into motion. It aligns with our long-term goals and is rooted in meaningful change. You’ll see improvements in how we communicate, deliver member services, and support flight safety and advocacy.
Strengthening Our Flight Network
As part of our commitment to member engagement, we’re placing renewed emphasis on connecting with COPA Flights from coast to coast. These local chapters are the heart of our network — where stories are shared, grassroots advocacy takes shape, and mentorship begins.
In the months ahead, we’ll be working to better support and collaborate with our Flights to ensure that your efforts are supported and celebrated, and that your needs help shape our national agenda.
“These are not abstract ambitions. They are real actions designed to create value, strengthen our community, and ensure your voice shapes the future of General Aviation in Canada.”
Looking Ahead
As I look to the future, I’m energized by the possibilities. COPA is a member-driven organization, and our strength lies in your stories, your advocacy, and your love of flight. Over the coming months, I look forward to meeting more of you, learning from your experiences, and continuing to build an organization that reflects where you are today and where you want to go.
Thank you for welcoming me into this incredible community. I’m honoured to lead COPA at such a pivotal time and remain committed to ensuring that our freedom to fly continues for generations to come.
Until next time, blue skies and safe flying.
