COPA Flight 13 Sudbury Re-Activated
Todd Thomas speaks at initial exploratory meeting at the Omar Aviation Hangar in Azilda
After many years of inactivity, COPA Flight 13 Sudbury has been reactivated. Originally established in 1967, Flight 13 was one of COPA’s earliest chapters. The Sudbury area has long been home to a vibrant aviation community, particularly among floatplane pilots, but in recent years shifting pilot demographics, the loss of key organizers and volunteers, rising airport fees, and other barriers led to a period of dormancy for the Flight. That began to change in late 2024, when local pilots Phil Chandler and John Maki recognized a renewed interest in the Sudbury area. Not only did they see an opportunity to bring together a group of like-minded aviators, but they also understood the importance of being a part of a national association to help advocate for general aviation in Canada.
An exploratory meeting was held on February 19th at the Omar Aviation hangar at the Azilda floatplane base. The turnout was impressive, over 60 individuals attended, demonstrating a clear interest in reviving the chapter. COPA Regional Director Grant Bailey was also in attendance, speaking about the benefits of being part of COPA and maintaining an active COPA Flight. Following the initial meeting, an organizing committee was formed and planning began for the first official event. Local pilot Todd Thomas generously offered his hangar and expanding facility on Kelly Lake to host a barbecue to be held on May 28th. Dr. David Pearson was invited as the guest speaker for the evening. Once again, turnout was significant, with more than 60 people socializing and enjoying the camaraderie of aviation.
Flight 13 is now planning additional events and possibly a fall fly-out. Congratulations to the organizing committee—and best wishes to COPA Flight 13 for many more successful events in the future.
