Kids, don't miss your chance to get a free ride in an airplane this month.

The Wetaskiwin Flying Club is hosting a 'Discover Aviation' event on Sept. 27, at the terminal building at the Wetaskiwin Regional Airport.

Discover Aviation is a program facilitated by the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) that promotes aviation as an industry, as well as for recreation, across the country though its local member clubs.

COPA provides an insurance program to ensure the safety and protection of all participants.

"At these events, the local pilots volunteer their time and the use of their aircraft to provide free rides to interested young people between the ages of 8 and 18 years," said Gary Steadman, chief pilot of Wetaskiwin's Discover Aviation event.

"These rides are very often the first introduction of these young people to the world of general aviation, and is their first chance to speak directly to a pilot and to touch and ride in a non-commercial airplane," said Steadman.

"I have participated in such events as a pilot and volunteer for more than 15 years, and these events are one of the great highlights of my aviation career."

The Wetaskiwin Flying Club is anticipating that about 100 kids will participate in the event, along with about a dozen pilots and other volunteers.

Rides will begin at 8 a.m. and continue to about noon.

Snacks and treats will be provided for the riders and their family, and parents and family are encouraged to attend. Visit the Facebook page 'Discover Aviation - Wetaskiwin' for the registration link.
