Aero Gatineau-Ottawa 2018- Arrival and Departure for Fly-in Guests
An air show is to be held on September 14 and 15, 2018 at the Gatineau-Ottawa Executive Airport (CYND) in Gatineau, Quebec. NAV CANADA, Gatineau Air Shows, Transport Canada, and the airport authorities have established special procedures for the large volume of air traffic expected in the Gatineau area because of the air show. NOTAMs must be checked for the latest information prior to operating in the area of the Ottawa/Gatineau control zone (CZ) and the Ottawa Terminal Control Area (TCA).

Single runway – east-west orientation (09-27) with a mid-point taxiway (“A”) to exit the runway towards the south (runway is difficult to see when arriving from the north due to a small escarpment)
Airport elevation 211 feet MSL
Circuits are flown at 1,200 feet MSL and at 90 kts for indicated airspeed (IAS) for airshow arrivals
RWY 09 – left hand circuit
RWY27 – right hand circuit
The airport is an “MF” (Mandatory Frequency) on 122.3, normal MF procedures apply during the airshow arrivals and departures unless otherwise indicated.
NOTAMs & Airspace modifications
The air show will take place within and around the Gatineau CZ from 1430Z to 2000Z (10:30 to 16:00 local time) on September 15. A practice will take place from 1700Z to 2000Z (13:00 to 16:00 local time) on September 14. For further information, please check the latest NOTAMs.
The airspace of the Gatineau CZ that is north of the Ottawa River’s north shore will be restricted under Section 5.1 of the Aeronautics Act, from surface to 8,000 feet above sea level (ASL) and south of the Ottawa River from 1,300 feet to 8,000 feet (ASL) during the following periods:
1600Z to 2000Z (12:00 to 16:00 local time) 14 September 2018
1400Z to 2100Z (10:00 to 17:00 local time) 15 September 2018
Arrival Time-slot and Transponder requirements
To ensure the airspace capacity can accommodate the expected demand, VFR flights arriving CYND between 1000Z and 1430Z (06:00 to 10:30 local time) on September 15 must:
1. Obtain an arrival time-slot; and
2. Be transponder equipped.
Slot-time and transponder code must be obtained prior to departing for CYND by contacting the following NAV CANADA agencies:
1. Montreal Flight Planning: 1-800-633-1353
2. Quebec & London FIC: 1-866-WXBRIEF
Time-slot reservation will be taken starting 11 September. Transponder codes can only be obtained on the day of flight.
A time-slot does not constitute an approval for entering the Gatineau CZ. Contact Ottawa terminal on frequency 127.7 MHz for permission to enter the Gatineau CZ, as described in the “Arrival procedures” below. Pilots can expect delays in flight on arrival during these periods.
All arriving aircraft operating below TCA airspace should, before reaching an entry point, maintain 90 knots and 1,200 feet ASL and be in contact with Ottawa terminal on 127.7 MHz. Pilots must maintain their own separation from other aircraft at all times.
VFR routes inbound Gatineau
East and South Approach • Fly towards entry point CUMBERLAND and contact Ottawa terminal before reaching the entry point on 127.7 MHz
Departure from Rockcliffe Airport • Contact Ottawa terminal on 127.7 MHz as soon as feasible upon departure. Plan to arrive via CHELSEA DAM entry point.
West and North Approach • Fly towards entry point CHELSEA DAM and contact Ottawa terminal before reaching the entry point on 127.7 MHz
Ottawa terminal will give final approval to proceed into the Gatineau CZ. Pilots will contact the Gatineau mandatory frequency (MF) on 122.3 MHz once approved by Ottawa terminal to enter the restricted airspace.
After landing, if safe to do so, turn south on Taxiway Alpha and contact the air show marshalling team on frequency 124.400 MHz. If you require a back track to Taxiway Alpha, be sure to inform Gatineau Radio on 122.3 MHz so they can relay the information to the aircraft landing behind you.
Aircraft marshallers assist pilots by directing their aircraft with a series of industry standard hand signals. These hand signals may direct the pilot to turn, stop, proceed or shut down in the event of a fire or emergency.
Expect to exit Taxiway Alpha eastbound, as signaled by the marshalling team, who will marshal you safely to your pre-assigned parking spot on the grass north of the main apron (Due to a very crowded ramp, reserved for performing and static display aircrafts, we have no room on pavement for visiting aircrafts). You will have to bring your own tie down equipment, as it is mandatory to secure your aircraft, tied downs are not provided.
100 LL: is available onsite at competitive prices, provided by a fuel truck. Please fuel on arrival as it gets extremely congested during departure time. The Marshalling team can assist you with contacting the refueling truck.
Also, please note that your aircraft will be parked within the sterile area of the show (“show box”). This means that prior to starting the airshow, we will have to ensure that there is no one in this area, and that no one enters during the show. So, you will not be permitted to access your aircraft until all the flying acts are done and the show comes to a close.
Marshallers will be available to safely assist you with starting and taxing your aircraft. Please ensure you follow their instructions, as they are hardworking volunteers with a focus on safety to protect all the participants and visitors to the show.
They will direct your aircraft out of the parking area and onto Taxiway Alpha, where you should remain on the right side short of the runway and maintain a listening watch on Gatineau Radio on 122.3 MHz.
Contact Gatineau Radio on 122.3 MHz only when first in line. FSS will give you an airport advisory and your transponder code. Please inform them if you need a back track for full length take off, or if you are able to do an intersection take off. If you are backtracking, you should plan for other aircraft to be departing on the same runway, from the intersection. The following runway length is available when departing from the intersection of Taxiway A: DEP RWY 27 = 3,187 feet; DEP RWY 09 = 2,810 feet.
In order to ensure a safe and efficient flow of traffic the following restrictions will apply upon departure, pilots must maintain their own separation from other aircraft at all times:
DEP RWY 27 – right hand circuit – when leaving the air show:
Westbound departure -> maintain runway heading, remain below 2,500 feet, contact Ottawa terminal on 127.7 MHz for higher
Northbound departure -> right turn crosswind, remain below 2,500 feet, contact Ottawa terminal on 127.7 MHz for higher
Eastbound departure -> right turns, exit east on downwind, remain below 2,500 feet, contact Ottawa terminal on 127.7 MHz for higher
Southbound departure -> left turn crosswind, remain below 2,500 feet, contact Ottawa terminal on 127.7 MHz for higher
DEP RWY 09 – left hand circuit – when leaving the air show:
Eastbound departure -> maintain runway heading, remain below 2,500 feet, contact Ottawa terminal on 127.7 MHz for higher
