Director, External Relations

Want to be part of the team that is shaping the future of aviation in Canda? COPA is looking for a Director, External Relations to lead our strategic communications and advocacy efforts.

Reporting to the President and CEO, and as a key member of COPA’s leadership team, the ideal candidate will have experience in public relations and stakeholder engagement, as well as a good understanding of aviation policy development and advocacy.

What you will do

The Director, External Relations will:

• Lead the development and implementation of strategies to promote and elevate COPA’s public image.
• Raise awareness of issues facing general aviation in Canada.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with COPA stakeholders including Transport Canada and NAV Canada.
• Provide counsel to the President and CEO and other senior team members as well as draft briefings for the COPA Board of Directors.
• Develop advocacy positions and deliver their successful communication.
• Assist the CEO in researching funding opportunities for COPA.
• Provide assistance with grants management. Facilitate the development, writing, submission, administration and monitoring of some grants.
• Work with the executive team to develop the organization’s legislative priorities and monitoring current legislation and government regulations.
• Act as the government liaison and spokesperson for the organization as well as represent COPA at events.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate will:

• Have a university degree in public relations, marketing, communications or related field, with aviation experience preferred.
• Demonstrate excellent project management skills, including planning and prioritization.
• Have at least 5 years if of management experience.
• Demonstrate experience working with media, public and/or government officials.
• Have comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARS), Canadian Aviation Regulation Advisory Council (CARAC) processes, Transportation Safety Board reporting, NAV CANADA, Transport Canada Civil Aviation structure.
• Have a fixed wing Private Pilot’s License (PPL) or higher (CPL, ATPL) preferred.
• Preferably be bilingual (French and English).
• Be able to work under pressure and demonstrate an ability to think strategically, whilst dealing with the day-to-day.
• Have strong writing as well as interpersonal and presentation skills.

What to expect

This position is permanent and will be based in Ottawa. Travel may be required.

Salary range $73,500 – $82,500 commensurate with experience.

Administrative and Membership Coordinator

Want to be part of the team that is shaping the future of aviation in Canada? COPA, Canada’s largest aviation association and the world’s second largest, is looking for a full time Administrative and Membership Coordinator to take our memberships to the next level!

The Administrative and Membership Coordinator will answer and route calls, guide visitors to the appropriate parties, field interdepartmental communications, and perform office tasks, including answering emails, delivering or responding to mailings, and maintaining employee and customer records. You will also analyze office processes and policies, develop creative solutions to problems, answer questions, and take part in financial planning and decision making.

Working with COPA President and CEO and staff, the Administrative and Membership Coordinator manages the recruitment and retention of COPA members (organizations and individuals) and serves as a point of contact and link between employees and members.

The Coordinator you should be committed to providing attentive support for internal and external parties and ensuring consistent, efficient operations. You should be courteous, analytical, proactive, and organized.

What you will do

The Administrative and Membership Coordinator is responsible for all communication with members, non-members and others in a relationship building role. Other responsibilities include:

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of a plan for identifying membership needs for support and service COPA, including needs assessments and surveys.
  • Assist in the general planning and implementation of programs designed to cultivate, maintain, and strengthen member ties to each other and to the association.
  • Participate in promotion of membership, member benefits and programs and services.
  • Solicit new and renewing membership.
  • Maintaining and updating membership records.
  • Collecting data, tracking membership statistics, and preparing reports.
  • Provide a high level of service including building strong relationships with members, non-members, donors and others.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests.
  • Assist COPA in engaging in effective collaborative relationships with member programs.
  • Responsible for timely entry and acknowledgement of all memberships.
  • Work with Executive Administrator/Office Manager to ensure timely completion of administrative tasks related to membership and payment processing, coordination of membership renewals, production of membership reports, updating membership data on website and in other functional systems.
  • Establish relationships with potential donors and participate in fundraising as assigned.
  • Maintain a process for tracking and acknowledging all COPA membership issues.
  • Work with the COPA Finance and Membership Benefits Manager to manage donations and reconciliation of records.
  • Organizing events and activities for existing and prospective members.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate will:

  • possess a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Have exceptional interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills in both French and English.
  • Be proficient with office technology and equipment, including fax machines, printers, copiers, scanners, and computers.
  • Have previous experience in member management, sales, or recruitment;
  • Have working knowledge of CiviCRM or similar database system: Experience with building databases an asset.
  • Be proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Possess excellent customer service skills;
  • have the ability to think creatively and take initiative;
  • Possess excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Have strong task and time management skills;
  • Posses basic math skills and an understanding of basic financial concepts;
  • Be highly organized.

What to expect

  • This is permanent position, based in Ottawa. Hybrid work schedule available.
  • Occasional travel is required (once or twice a year).

  • Salary range is between $40,000 to $50,000 per year, depending on experience.
