I joined COPA flight 188 in Debert Nova Scotia at the same time that I purchased my first plane, May 2016. have been a pilot and owner for almost an equal amount of time. I took my first discovery flight in April 2016 and started looking for an aircraft shortly after. I bought a 1965 Cessna 172G to complete my training on, attaining my PPL in December of that same year. I currently hold a night rating. I am training for my commercial license and hope to attain an IFR rating in the near future.
I have participated in helping to revive the membership of Flight 188 by hosting semi regular meetings, helping to organize breakfasts and having our Flight help out with the Snowbirds over Debert in June 2019. Also helping the COPA Flight 125 Summerside PEI with their COPA For Kids event in the summer of 2018. It was my first experience with public outreach in Aviation. Being able to let children experience the joy of flight in a small aircraft was an “uplifting” experience for me. I am committed to the promotion of General Aviation and believe we need to inspire the next generation of pilots and owners. Outreach and public participation is something that we all need to do as COPA members and ambassadors of flight.
I have recently moved up to a Cessna 182 this year purchasing it in British Columbia and flying it across the country to its new home in Debert, NS. Meeting COPA members and business that support flight across the country at almost every stop we made was fun for us.
I have past board experience with Snowboard Nova Scotia, the provincial committee representing Snowboard Canada, which is the national body governing and supporting the amateur sport up to the Olympic level. For the past twelve years, I have been a Trustee on a board of a Self-Insured Health Benefits Plan for the Halifax Professional Firefighters Union Local 268. We are the trustees for a 450-member (plus dependants) health and welfare insurance plan that has been operating for our members since 2006. I have recently retired from a 32-year career as a professional firefighter for the City of Halifax and look forward to participating in upcoming COPA events and exercising my freedom to fly. Hopefully I can be of service to the Maritime Membership.
