COPA Chair, Bill Mahoney

On behalf of your Board of Directors, I wish all COPA members and their families a happy and healthy New Year.

With many COVID restrictions and complications, the past year continued to be challenging on many fronts. We did see a glimmer of hope for a few months only to see more severe restrictions resume as COVID case counts rose again with new variants. Our community, however, was resilient and able the weather the challenges that these restrictions brought forth.

While we had hoped to see you in person at our 2021 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and National Fly-In, conditions made it impossible. Turning this unfortunate situation into an opportunity was accomplished by our dedicated COPA team who planned, organized and hosted COPA’s very first virtual Fly-In. A huge thank you goes out to staff, sponsors and volunteers who helped make it a success. We were also able to hold the AGM virtually and were pleased to present COPA’s strong financial position, thanks to the guidance of my Board colleagues and the leadership of our President and CEO, Christine Gervais. Financial responsibility and accountability have been and will continue to be a governance pillar of your Board.

Under the current leadership, and with the strength of the COPA team we are now reinvigorated and ready to take on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. If there has been a silver lining to the pandemic, it is that it has caused us to adopt and implement technology and reach out to our membership virtually. Our information and safety webinars are extremely well attended and have become very popular with our membership. I couldn’t be prouder of the work this small and mighty team has accomplished, despite the many and significant challenges presented by the ongoing global pandemic.

At the board level, we continue to support the current strategic goals and look forward to renewing and expanding our Strategic Plan in the coming months, with an overarching goal to advance, promote and preserve our Canadian freedom to fly.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the Directors that serve on the Board for their continued leadership in representing their regions with passion and devotion. Their contribution of knowledge, experience and guidance is crucial to the continued success of COPA. Please take a moment to get to know your Regional Director, their contact information is located on our website and inside the front cover of every COPA Flight

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for June 25, 2022, and will coincide with our long-anticipated National Fly-In and Aviation Exhibition in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC (CYJN). I hope to see many of you there and to reconnect in person once again.

Wishing you and yours a prosperous 2022. Safe flying and I wish you blue skies and tailwinds!
