Is your fly-in legal? - COPA provides Air Meet liability insurance for events organized by our Flights, including monthly meetings, COPA For Kids flights and fly-ins.

During the summer of 2012, I attended a number of fly-ins and took notes about how they were run in preparation for an upcoming review of our insurance with our new broker, Magnes. A few things stood out and got me thinking: “Does COPA Air Meet insurance really cover that?” and “Does this part of the fly-in require a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada?” and “What if an accident occurs and a SFOC has not been issued? “Survey Says!” Lobbying, promoting aviation in Canada - This is the fourth in a series of articles providing feedback on comments made by members in our recent membership survey http://www.copanational.org/files/2012Survey4Website.pdf. Some suggestions for improvement have cost implications and the COPA Board of Director’s Strategic Planning Committee will be prioritizing them and providing direction for COPA staff.

Manitoba’s St. Andrews Airport wins female friendly title - From March 4 to March 10, 2013, over 2,100 volunteers across four continents - Africa, Asia, America, and Europe - introduced more than 17,000 girls and women to the opportunities available in the air and space industry as part of the Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week celebration, held annually during the week of March 8, anniversary date of the first female pilot license worldwide.

Uncertainty over Banff, Jasper airstrips resolved - Long awaited amendments to the National Parks Aircraft Access Regulations were Gazetted (came into law) on February 13, meaning Banff and Jasper continue to be available for emergency/diversionary use and Jasper is available for non-commercial recreational use.

Some suggestions for improvement have cost implications and the COPA Board of Director’s Strategic Planning Committee will be prioritizing them and providing direction for COPA staff. We in turn will report on progress or issues that prevent us from fully implementing some changes. Articles will be published as progress is made.

COPA For Kids tops 10K mark - The COPA For Kids aviation program is a success, with more than 10,000 Junior Aviators flown since the start of the program, thanks to the efforts of COPA member pilots and volunteers across Canada.

ELT update: real world advantages, disadvantages - It has been one year since my last ELT update, in which I reported that there was no change in the status of the regulation amendment and that current regulation remains in place.
