COPA AWARDS

 

COPA Awards recipients are chosen by the Awards Committee and the board of directors from nominations submitted by members. The program is an excellent opportunity to recognize good deeds, large and small, in the Canadian aviation community. COPA accepts nominations for its awards throughout the year.

 

Overview

Purpose: The purpose of this Awards Program is to recognize individuals and organizations demonstrating an outstanding record of support for personal aviation in Canada and to aid in the promotion, growth and prosperity of aviation in Canada.

Awards can be presented at a number of venues, the primary location being the luncheon at COPA's AGM (annual general meeting) Fly-in which is held in various venues across Canada. Other presentation locations can include any local area where the recipient’s friends and family may gather to honour the recipient.

 

Eligibility for Awards: Normally applicants and nominees must be residents of Canada and members of COPA. In some cases it might be appropriate to honour an individual or organization with an award where the recipient is not a member of COPA. The Awards Committee shall make this determination.

 

Selection Committee: Every two years, a COPA Awards Committee shall be established by the Board at the same meeting that the COPA Officers are elected. This Awards Committee will then be responsible for adjudicating the award nominations that have been previewed by the COPA staff to ensure active/valid membership in COPA of the nominator and would-be award recipient. The committee will be formed with a chair and two additional Board members to decide whether each nominated applicant should receive the award and to then advise the COPA staff of their decision.

In the case of the President’s Award, the nomination of a recipient will be made by the President and CEO of COPA. The Awards Committee will approve or reject the nomination.

The Literary Award nomination will be made by the COPA Editor and Publisher and then approved or rejected by the Awards Committee.

Adjudication will normally occur via email as soon as possible after a nomination is received. In some cases, a teleconference may be necessary to discuss the merits of a particular nomination.

 

Eligibility for Specific Awards

Any individual or organization, public or private, is eligible to receive the following two awards. The recognized contribution may be a single incident of an outstanding nature or continuous service to personal aviation over a period of time. The quantity is limited only by the annual budget and may be given throughout the year as well as at the convention:

a) COPA Award of Merit for COPA members who do something special to further COPA's aims either singularly or over a period of time;

b) COPA Appreciation Award for non-COPA members who do something special to support or promote personal aviation.

The COPA President’s Award is given annually to an individual(s) who has made a very notable contribution to personal aviation in Canada.

The COPA Literary Award is given annually to the individual contributing the best article to the COPA Flight paper.

 

Selection Criteria

Awards should normally be for a contribution to personal aviation in Canada.

The impact of the contribution should relate to improvements within aviation in areas such as safety, management, engineering, leadership, promotion etc.

In the unlikely event that suitable recipients for any awards can not be found in a given year, awards shall not be presented.

Currently serving members of the Board and Staff are not eligible for an award.

Nominations

When submitting nominations, please describe briefly, on not more than two pages, your reasons for nominating this person for the particular award. Also allow two months from submittion for procession to presenting.
